Last night at the St Paul Eagles we premiered a new part time member of Monica and the Molecules. It was Metal Steel, who played some strings. We were happy to see a few friends out for this premier and to those friends who also provided support for the St Paul Aerie for the Arts events. Our next show will be at The Uptown Bar on Wednesday, July 23rd and it will be a free show.

Well, for everyone who passed over our show last night, be it for the holiday or for other reasons, really missed a fun and entertaining night. Monica and the Molecules kicked off the night with a mix of rock and cabaret songs, which may have opened the audience to things they have never dreamed. We received many nice compliments and thoroughly enjoyed the other three bands. We always enjoy Chooglin', and were happy to open for them once again.

One side note, though, drummer Buckminster Fullerene was distinctly missing last night and in his place was some odd Dr. Seussian creature calling himself Caffiene-y Lou Who. We'll have to find out what happened to our Bucky Ball before the next show.

The History of Hip

Monica went to the Turf Club Tuesday night to see a presentation by the Minnesota Historical Society. It was "The History of Hip: The Beats" Presenters Maria Damon (professor at U of M) and poet J. Otis Powell discussed and read beat poetry and the famous beat poets. There wasn't much discussion regarding Monica's favorite two beats, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jack Kerouac, but we learned about some others with whom we were not familiar. Here are two examples that stayed with us:

Something in the Way of Things--Amiri Baraka

In town In town In town

Something in the way of things
Something that will quit and won't start
Something you know but can't stand
Can't know get along with
Like death
Riding on top of the car peering through the windshield for his cue
Something entirely fictitious and true
That creeps across your path hallowing your evil ways
Like they were yourself passing yourself not smiling
The dead guy you saw me talking to is your boss
I tried to put a spell on him but his spirit is illiterate

I know things you know and nothing you don't know
'cept I saw something in the way of things
Something grinning at me and I wanted to know, was it funny?
Was it so funny it followed me down the street
Greeting everybody like the good humor man
But an they got the taste of good humor but no ice cream
It was like dat
Me talking across people into the houses
And not seeing the beings crowding around me with ice picks
You could see them
But they looked like important Negroes on the way to your funeral
Looked like important jiggaboos on the way to your auction
And let them chant the number and use an ivory pointer to count your teeth
Remember Steppen Fetchit
Remember Steppen Fetchit how we laughed
An all your Sunday school images giving flesh and giggling
With the ice pick high off his head
Made ya laugh anyway

I can see something in the way of our selves
I can see something in the way of our selves
That's why I say the things I do, you know it
But its something else to you
Like that job
This morning when you got there and it was quiet
And the machines were yearning soft behind you
Yearning for that nigga to come and give up his life
Standin' there bein' dissed and broke and troubled

My mistake is I kept sayin' "that was proof that God didn't exist"
And you told me, "nah, it was proof that the devil do"
But still, its like I see something I hear things
I saw words in the white boy's lying rag
said he was gonna die poor and frustrated
That them dreams walk which you 'cross town
S'gonna die from over work
There's garbage on the street that's tellin' you you ain't shit
And you almost believe it
Broke and mistaken all the time
You know some of the words but they ain't the right ones
Your cable back on but ain't nothin' you can see
But I see something in the way of things
Something to make us stumble
Something get us drunk from noise and addicted to sadness
I see something and feel something stalking us
Like and ugly thing floating at our back calling us names
You see it and hear it too
But you say it got a right to exist just like you and if God made it
But then we got to argue
And the light gon' come down around us
Even though we remember where the (light or mic) is
Remember the Negro squinting at us through the cage
You seen what I see too?
The smile that ain't a smile but teeth flying against our necks
You see something too but can't call its name

Ain't it too bad y'all said
Ain't it too bad, such a nice boy always kind to his motha
Always say good morning to everybody on his way to work
But that last time before he got locked up and hurt, real bad
I seen him walkin' toward his house and he wasn't smiling
And he didn't even say hello
But I knew he'd seen something
Something in the way of things that it worked on him like it do in will
And he kept marching faster and faster away from us
And never even muttered a word
Then the next day he was gone
You wanna know what
You wanna know what I'm talkin' about
Sayin' "I seen something in the way of things"
And how the boys face looked that day just before they took him away
The is? in that face and remember now, remember all them other faces
And all the many places you've seen him or the sister with his child
Wandering up the street
Remember what you seen in your own mirror and didn't for a second recognize
The face, your own face
Straining to get out from behind the glass
Open your mouth like you was gon' say somethin'
Close your eyes and remember what you saw and what it made you feel like
Now, don't you see something else
Something cold and ugly
Not invisible but blended with the shadow criss-crossing the old man
Squatting by the drug store at the corner
With is head resting uneasily on his folded arms
And the boy that smiled and the girl he went with

And in my eyes too
A waving craziness splitting them into the jet stream of a black bird
Wit his ass on fire
Or the solomNOTness of where we go to know we gonna be happy

I seen something
I SEEN something
And you seen it too
You seen it too
You just can't call it's name name name name name name name

written 2002 best that I can tell

The Sermon--Ted Joans

So you want to be hip little girls?
You want to learn to swing?
And you want to be able to dig and take in everything

Well, Molecule Ethanol and Monica are working on a new project for local arts. In order to help everything flow, we started a MySpace for the project (more on that later as we work out some details). But, we also decided to open a MySpace for Monica and the Molecules. We are currently just leading people to Live Journal, which I believe to be better if you want lots of information easily, but it opens up new doors for people to find our Live Journal. So, check out MySpace, but we will always be posting here. Our next show is March 19th at Big V's.

Well, we survived another Club Underground show. This time, all behaved and we had some new molecule supporters come out to see us. We also debuted our new song "It's All About Me." One molecule supporter noted that You Tube did not do us justice, but we insist on putting up new videos none the less. Another adoring fan, who will remain annonymous, noted that he enjoyed our show even more now that Caveman is a part of the band. We all scratched our heads (knowing that Caveman has always been with us) and then he realized his error that he was thinking of another band that could use Caveman's touch. Alas, Caveman, aka Molecule Ethanol, needs to continue to concentrate on us and is not available to revive any other bands. Molecule Ethanol was quite complimented by the thought, however. Here is a video from our show. The sound quality was not the best, but none the less, we look cool.
Sex with the Devil

The show at the 4th Street Station was very fun and it is too bad that we didn't see more costumed people on this so-called Halloween weekend. It is difficult to compete with this city and all of its bars offering Halloween events on the Saturday before Halloween. I do love costumed events, though. Monica was definitely dressed for success at the show as she won 4th place in the costume contest. The 4th place prize consisted of tickets to the Minnesota Roller Derby. The show went on well, trials of new songs and sounds. All in all, we felt it to be our best show yet, and yes, we will get some new YouTubes out someday! We enjoyed new molecules for this show: Uracil Mustard, Dimethyltryptamine, Polyethylene, and Theanine. Later, Molecules Ethanol, Caffeine, Theanine, and Dimethyltryptamine went out with Monica to a bar on Randolph Ave for some extra socializing and drinks.
First prize in the costume contest was a person dressed as a cell phone, which was a great costume. Molecules Buckminster Fullerene and Ethanol were bagheads and we were technically Monica and the Baggage last night. Buckminster Fullerene tore his baghead early on and so it didn't quite work for him, but Ethanol held strong.
I hope that In the Basement Productions made enough on their fundraiser to make the evening worthwhile for them. We certainly enjoyed ourselves!

New York for Monica

Well, Monica is getting back from New York just in time to rehearse and perform on Saturday, October 27 at the 4th Street Station. It is a benefit show for In The Basement Productions And we ask Monica, "How was New York?" Well, it was fun, of course. The flight started well, all flights being on a small jet. Then, it was a nap before dinner at Sardi's preceding a Broadway musical called Avenue Q. (It was hilarious and highly recommended if you also make the trek to New York). Then, sleep before the next day's events of The Sex Museum of NY, a Pub Crawl Literary Tour, and dinner in Little Italy. The Third day involved a walk around Manhatten before touring the UN Building, then the Museum of Modern Art, then the Museum of Broadcast history. At the third event of the day, Monica viewed a James Bond special, an interview with Leonard Nimoy with Tom Snyder, an episode of Dobie Gillis, and 10 episodes done by Jim Henson for Saturday Night Live. Dinner was in Brooklyn Heights at the Lichee Nut...then a walk around a Brooklyn Neighborhood. The fourth day involved a walk around Wall Street and to the World Trade Center site, a trip to Tiffany's, and a difficult wait all around at the Liberty Island/Ellis Island excursion, which ended up being 5 hours for basically a two and a half hour event. Then, dinner in the Village at a New York Italian restaurant. All in all a wonderful trek and hopefully a revitalizing trip so Monica can perform Saturday!

Well, Monica and the Molecules had a show on Wednesday, Oct 3, which was a rough show for a number of reasons including:
1. Monica had spent a brief amount of time the previous weekend in the hospital
2. We were unrehearsed because of Molecule Ethanol's house arrest
3. Molecule Buckminster Fullerene had multiple shows that weekend with multiple bands
4. Molecule Ethanol and Molecule Buckminster Fullerene decided to party early in the night
5. We were all tired from above things coupled with supporting a very excellent band from San Francisco on Monday night: The Makes Nice Plus, they stayed at Monica's house, as did Molecule Ethanol, and well, I guess it might have been quite a bit worse if Monica had been feeling better, as the party might have continued longer...

The show on the 3rd was for DEMO. Monica and the Molecules were interviewed for some project someone is making to talk about DEMO. We were so out of it that we don't know if our comments will actually make it in or not, but we'll keep everyone posted. We were even so unaware that we don't know what the cover charge was, though we think it was $5, which supported DEMO. Our next show will be Oct 14 at the Turf Club...much more familiar grounds for us!

Well, Molecule Caffeine and Monica had a wild time in San Francisco. More on that in a moment, but first, an entry on Friday, Aug 31st State Fair show. What a wonderful show. Monica has now become an official baker of St Agnes Bakery. Baker Klecko thought this was our best show. Molecule Buckminster Fullerene added so much to the show. We look forward to next year, both shows featuring the Italian Monica and the Molecules...will have to come up with a cool name. Our naming trend has just been to Americanize the name Oumo delle Caverne thus announcing the show as Caveman. We'll post it on You Tube once we have some free time.

Now, onto San Francisco. Molecule Caffeine has a cousin who had a wedding on Sunday, Sept 2. That cousin's brother is in a band, by the way, named "The Makes Nice." They are coming to Minneapolis, The Triple Rock Social Club, on Oct 1. (mark that on your calendars as also on the bill will be one of Molecule Caffeine's favorite bands named Peelander-Z.) The wedding was very tastefully done and was not in your face like some are. It was a fun family/friends united event.

We also attended the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love event in Golden Gate Park. (Summer of Love) Just like the comments on You Tube say, it was incredible. We also entered the Castro district where Monica received some fashion ideas, which will be featured in upcoming shows. Other events ended up being touristy, except eating at a great restaurant in Chinatown that did not look touristy and eating tasty food in Little Italy. We did, of course, visit City of Lights bookstore and purchased some books for the ride home and visited the shrine of St Francis of Assisi. Phillip Glass will be at City of Lights in Late September and Robert F Kennedy Jr was at the shrine Sept 5, when we were flying home.

The Molecules will be gathering at Monica's shortly to view the shows of the past week. Then, plans for practice. No shows in Sept, but some shows scheduled for October will be announced soon.

Big V's and the State Fair

The Big V's show was fun. Comments were made that this was our best show yet. We had exciting new props and songs and had lots of good energy, despite starting 45 minutes later than expected. I was disappointed, because I really thought we'd start on time this time. Molecule Caffeine went home early to sleep for himself and for Monica. Molecule Bremelanotide decided that Monica was good at delegating if she could get someone to sleep for her. The Molecule to be decided and Molecule Ethanol played pool and lost, but it was fun for them. We all closed the bar, then back to Monica's and Molecule Caffeine's for a short after party.

The Spaghetti Opera was fun this year. Monica and Molecule Ethanol performed at St Agnes Bakery at 3 pm at the Minnesota State Fair. Friday, all of Monica and the Molecules will be presenting the Spaghetti Opera at St Agnes Bakery stage in the Creative Arts building at 5 pm. We were told not to toss the food around the stage so much this year, as last year, the general manager was cleaning for months after the fair. So, what does Molecule Ethanol do first thing? Toss Mostaciolli at the audience as we are being announced (and the audience was being warned about flying food). Ah, but it is all in good fun. Someone wanted samples of our spaghetti. We are not allowed to give samples at the fair, but perhaps there will be samples at one of the St Agnes Bakery's first Saturday events.

We were all too tired to do too much at the fair, though Molecule Caffeine won $3 off at Chuck and Don's and Monica won a T-shirt. Seeing as we have a dog (Molecule Civetone), we might use the coupon David won.

P.S. You can read about this and many other molecules at Molecule of the day!

Back from the Minnesota State Fair

Well, it was another exciting day at the State Fair. We won all kinds of trinkets for answering questions, got some free admissions to the Minneapolis Institute of Art through their art on a stick giveaways, and ate all kinds of bad for you food. We also took several fun surveys in the Education building. Does Monica and the Molecules support Mike Ciresi? Well, we're not sure, but Monica was photographed talking with him about health, education, and wage issues. Molecule Ethanol did well as Hommes des Cavernes at the French Crepes stage and was even asked back if there were openings. He sounded and looked French, which, of course was his goal. Monica won points at the Toyota Hybrid exhibit and opted to donate her points for a Sequoia tree to be planted in California (or at least a tree in a Sequoia forest.) Molecule Caffeine and Molecule Ethanol opted to turn in their points for a flashlight, which they're still working on to get working. The Green Party was impressed by Monica's concern for the environment when she noted that she had recycled last year's fair buttons so as not to take repeat buttons this year, thus filling up the landfills. The Green Party was also impressed by Molecule Caffeine's shirt. The Green Party and the Democrats had petitions for instant runoff voting. The Republicans mostly had petitions for against immigrants. The Independence Party had nice bandanas that added to Monica's cuteness. We met some of the Minnesota Vixens whom we did not know much about. We won bottle openers and chip clips from the Timberwolves and bottle carriers from the USPS. Advil had a game to throw balls at aches and pains and win prizes. Monica won a stress ball, but neither of the other two won anything. We took a photo, which we'll find someday on the Advil link. Qwest gave us a nice cloth bag at the beginning of our journey, and by the end, it was much appreciated. We still had more we wanted to see, but we're back in a few days, so I'm sure there'll be more to update.

Well, Monica and the Molecules continue to rehearse once or twice a week. Sometimes we start out by watching videos and relaxing. Last week, for example, we watched Molecule Buckminster Fullerene's other band do strange things with Chicken Skins. That led Molecule Ethanol to the conclusion that he had the right drummer in his band...someone sick enough to do that would be creative enough for all of his ideas, too!

We have discovered that there is a very direct link to all of our videos, which is http://www.youtube.com/mandmolecules

Now, we're off to the fair to see Molecule Ethanol as Hommes des Cavernes at the French Crepes show, but first, I should be safe and check the terror alert:

Well, our fourth video has posted to You Tube now. Monica heard this song on a compilation that one of Molecule Caffeine's former co-workers made. It turns out many people have heard this song, but it is a cool song. And, this video shows the band with Monica wearing her favorite dress while performing at Big V's. (if you look carefully, you'll see it...the video is kind of dark.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya3yJjj2cns

Video courtesy of Molecule Caffeine

Years ago, on KFAI, we heard Ann Magnuson's song "Sex with the Devil." We remembered it well and finally arranged our own version of it. In addition, Molecule Ethanol remembers watching Doby Gillis as a child and watching the Beatnik character state that there were no jelly doughnuts in the window, little doggy, only death. We used these themes to start our show at Lee's Liquor Lounge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoJcPzO00Xs

Video courtesy of Molecule Caffeine
